India piled up a massive 255 for 5 after being sent in to bat in the T20 World Cup final. It is the highest total in a T20 World Cup final and also the highest score at the Ahmedabad venue. Overall, it is the third-highest total in T20 World Cup history.
Winning the toss did little to help New Zealand contain India's batters. Instead, half-centuries from top-order batters Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan laid the foundation for a huge total.
Abhishek launched a spectacular assault during the powerplay, reaching his half-century off just 18 balls. India raced to 92 without loss in six overs. Rachin Ravindra dismissed Abhishek for 52 in the eighth over, ending the 98-run opening stand. His 21-ball innings included six fours and three sixes.
Samson had been less aggressive early on but later unleashed a fierce attack, making a total of 300 look possible. Kishan joined in the assault as India continued to score rapidly.
However, James Neesham struck three times in the 16th over, sending Samson (89), Ishan Kishan (54) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) back to the pavilion in quick succession.
Samson's 46-ball knock featured five fours and eight sixes, while Kishan struck four fours and four sixes in his 25-ball innings.
The sudden loss of wickets slowed India's momentum. When Hardik Pandya was dismissed for a duck by Matt Henry in the 18.2nd over, the pressure on the hosts increased further.
Shivam Dube's explosive late hitting nevertheless helped India cross the 250-run mark. He remained unbeaten on 26 off just eight balls, smashing three fours and two sixes.
Neesham was New Zealand's leading wicket-taker with three for 46. Henry and Ravindra claimed one wicket each.
